Stay in the Heart of Downtown San Francisco at the Historic Westin St. Francis Hotel

New Picture (8)

This past spring, the Westin St. Francis, in downtown San Francisco, announced the completion of an ambitious $20 million renovation of the Tower Building. The renovation was completed in anticipation of the hotel’s 110th anniversary as the “Grand Dame” of San Francisco. The renovated Tower Building is one of the tallest in Union Square, offering incredible views of the city.

A design team from the hotel’s parent company, Strategic Hotels & Resorts, set out to create a new vibe at the Westin St. Francis without disturbing the historical nature of the building. They have successfully created a fusion between old and new that combines the latest in technology with modern, contemporary style and amenities. Guests will see the dramatic changes right away in the color choices, local artwork, and furnishings.

Walking through the tower’s renovated corridors is an experience unto itself. Brand-new carpet paves the way for new wall coverings, ceiling pendants, furnishings, mirrors, and contemporary artwork. As you walk down the corridor, a building anticipation of what your room looks like is a natural reaction.

Hotel Accommodations

Westin St. Francis’ Tower Building boasts 569 guest rooms on 32 floors. The entire hotel property offers 1,195 guest rooms and 48 suites. Recently renovated rooms offer contemporary furnishings, floor-to-ceiling drapes, executive desks, and spacious bathrooms with marble vanities.

  • complementary robes
  • private-label bath and beauty products
  • high-speed Internet
  • 37-inch LCD TV
  • writing desk and chair
  • in room bar
  • turn-down service

The hotel’s suites offer a full range of additional amenities designed to pamper the discriminating traveler. Among those amenities are semi-private entrances and accommodations that are more spacious.

This state-of-the-art facility combines the best in luxury spa treatments with a modern gym facility sporting all of the latest equipment. The location of the hotel in Union Square makes the most exciting downtown destinations easily accessible. Right outside the doors, guests have access to San Francisco’s historic cable car service, further expanding their access to the City by the Bay.

Welcome to the Canary – Santa Barbara’s Luxury Boutique Hotel

Canary Santa Barbara's Luxury Boutique Hotel

What do you love most about Santa Barbara? Perhaps the incredible coastal views or the Spanish Colonial and Mission Revival architecture. Alternatively, maybe you appreciate the distinctive neighborhoods of the city and the peaceful tranquility of its outlying regions. In either case, The Canary Hotel encapsulates everything Santa Barbara in a luxury boutique experience that is as laid-back and casual as the area itself.

The Canary is proud to offer luxury accommodations without embracing stuffy traditionalism. The property is located on West Camarillo, just one block from State Street and the historic downtown district. That means it is also at the center of Santa Barbara’s arts, culture and dining. Within easy walking distance, you will find all the local hot spots, letting you truly experience what coastal California is really like.

The Property

The Canary features Spanish Colonial architecture and complementary furnishings throughout. You will feel right at home relaxing on a tastefully elegant sofa or enjoying the splendid art on display throughout the property. From the breathtaking rooftop pool deck, you’ll enjoy spectacular 360° views of the entire city and the distant mountains. Be sure to properly allocate time to sufficiently enjoy the rooftop pool, as it’s the only one in the city. If the beach is your preferred spot for relaxation, it is only a mile away.

Hotel amenities will complete your stay at The Canary. As a guest, you will enjoy an evening wine tour with the hotel’s Master Sommelier, in-room spa services, complementary bicycles for getting around the city, and a rooftop lounge and pool area reserved for guests only. First thing in the morning, there is complimentary coffee and tea service in the lobby, and if you need assistance with anything you have planned for the day, a concierge is on hand to help.

The Accommodations

The accommodations at The Canary are all about Santa Barbara style and ambiance. Inspired by the famous Canary Islands in Spain, each of the rooms and suites reflects the fact that the city is known as the “American Rivera.” Hardwood floors provide a warm and welcoming environment while over-sized French doors open to reveal fantastic views. As for spaciousness, that’s a given. Each of the rooms offers a minimum of 300 square feet of living space.

In-room amenities include:

  • fully stocked bar including gourmet offerings
  • luxurious Italian Frette linens
  • pillow-top beds with down pillows and comforters
  • free, on-demand fitness TV and yoga mats
  • iHome alarm and sound system

Dining and Wellness

The Canary wants your stay to be fully complete. To that end, the hotel offers exquisite dining at the Finch and Fork and Rooftop Perch restaurants. Both feature authentic local cuisine and an excellent wine list. While visiting The Canary we enjoyed Finch and Fork, which was overhauled and renamed just over a year ago. The restaurant is a perfect companion to the hotel, yet should certainly be enjoyed by those that aren’t staying at the hotel as well. It has an expansive wine and cocktail menu that you can enjoy within the restaurant or at the bar. For food you can expect local and fresh ingredients. Some of our favorites included their unique take at Deviled Eggs, Roasted Beet Salad, Wil Mushroom flatbed, Baby Back Pork Ribs, and the Buttermilk Friend Chicken on Tuesday’s!

To promote the wellness of guests, The Canary offers in-room spa services as well as access to the Spectrum Club located directly next door. Both options will help you achieve total relaxation of mind and body.

The Canary is Santa Barbara’s premier luxury boutique hotel. For an oceanfront alternative, see our review of The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, or head inland to The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern for wine-country luxury. Make your reservations today for an unforgettable experience on the American Riviera.

LUX Tip: Take the complimentary bikes to the beach, and then on your way back hit the Urban Wine Trail in downtown for some afternoon tastings.

Nightly rates at Canary start at $240.

Experience Whistler in the Summer Like You Never Have: Riding ATV’s

Whistler ATV
What do you do during the summer months when you live near a world-class skiing destination? If you are a savvy business owner, you figure out a way to take advantage of all the natural beauty of the surrounding area. That is just what has been done at Whistler ATV. The British Columbia company offers a variety of summer tours using ATVs to take guests up into the mountains. Whistler also makes a year-round base for luxury travelers, with the Four Seasons Whistler setting the standard among Canada resorts.

The 2 – 3 hour ATV tours are a great way to explore the beauty of the mountain, and also experience the thrill that ATV’s have to offer. On a recent tour the guide did a nice job of balancing both safety and enjoying a exhilarating ride. It’s the kind of high-energy outing you’ll find on our activities roundups.

Whistler ATV offers four different tour options. The lower level rides can be enjoyed by novices and can accommodate two people per vehicle. The remaining two tours are for experienced riders operating ATVs as single riders. Here is a brief description of the four options:

  1. Easy Rider – A two-hour ride aimed at beginners and families. It covers a variety of trails and logging roads at a fairly slow pace. It offers the opportunity to take in some wonderful scenery and learn to operate an ATV at the same time.
  2. Bushwacker – The Bushwacker is available as either a two or a three-hour tour for tandem riders. It is intended for intermediate riders or those who at least have a basic understanding of ATVs. It follows the same trails and roads as the Easy Rider, though the speeds are higher and more ground is covered. Once again, the spectacular scenery will be all around you.
  3. Top of the World – A three-hour adventure with single riders only. This trip will take you up nearly 5,000 feet for some spectacular views. The trails and roads are equally challenging.
  4. Backcountry BBQ – Guests who would like to combine an advanced ride with great food can choose the Backcountry BBQ tour. The ride is similar to the Top of the World but with one major difference: guests return to the company’s private cabin in the Brandywine Valley for an exquisite BBQ lunch. A minimum of six individuals is necessary to book this tour.

If you want to experience Whistler in a new way like you never have before Whistler ATV offers a fun ride for all ATV experience levels. Be sure to book your reservations before the snow starts flying again — and if you’re planning a winter return, check our roundup of the best luxury ski resorts in the world.

Rides start at just over $100 per tour.

Enjoy the Fresh & Local Flavors at MKT Restaurant in Four Seasons San Francisco

Four Seasons San Francisco MKT Restaurant
Four Seasons
opened the brand-new MKT Restaurant at their San Francisco SoMa hotel last June. The restaurant, which was designed to be bar-centric, opened last year after an extensive renovation. It is the first restaurant renovation at the hotel since its 2001 opening.

The MKT Restaurant is perfectly suited to a modern taste that prefers the small plate in a social atmosphere to more formal dining. The menu is decidedly California, thanks to Executive Chef Mark Richardson and Restaurant Chef Chris Aguirre. Between the two, they have developed a fine selection of steaks and small plates are designed to be shared among groups of friends and family members. It is the perfect choice for the modern San Francisco.

Richardson and Aguirre set about to create a unique dining experience by grouping menu items that encourage a more communal and social atmosphere. The lunch and dinner groupings are appetizers, communal dishes, and California cuts. Those enjoying brunch will experience a full menu of starters, brunch dishes, and sides. The restaurant also serves breakfast beginning at 6:30 AM. The staff at the restaurant on a recent trip to the restaurant created a friendly, almost family-like atmosphere, making constant recommendations. By the end of the meal the server had created a close relationship with those at the table.

The Bar

Being that MKT is a bar-centric restaurant, it was necessary to make sure that the bar was the anchor of the space. It is obvious this has not disappointed. The gorgeous, L-shaped bar can easily be seen from the lobby as guests pass by, inviting you into an open and welcoming space featuring small tables, couches and excellent views of the bustling financial district outside.

No world-class bar would be complete a without world-class variety of drink selections. MKT’s bar invites you to enjoy a specialty, handcrafted cocktail made with ingredients sourced within 100 miles of the city. A couple of favorite drinks from the recent trip included the “Hop-dog” (Hophead Vodka, Grapefruit Ice Ball, Salted Rim) and “Scarface” (Tempelton Rye, Grapefruit, Agave, Orange Bitters, Basil).

Beer and wine lovers will also feel right at home at the MKT. A number of craft beers are offered as well as an extensive wine list from around the world. Half of MKT’s wines come directly from California while the other half hail from France, Russia, and beyond.

The Atmosphere

The fact that MKT’s entrance is on Market Street plays a big role in the ambiance and atmosphere. The designers of the space, New York-based AvroKO, wanted to take advantage of the neighborhood’s history for newspapers and publishing. What it has accomplished is absolutely stunning. Inside the space you will see the dark oak floors, plenty of brushed brass, wallpaper made with recycled newsprint, green and black leather accents, and numerous pieces of decoration that hearken back to the golden era of the newspaper.

The atmosphere lends itself to informal and casual dining in the main bar area. However, the restaurant also features a number of private dining rooms for your party or business gathering. There are three private dining options: Windows at MKT, the View dining room, and a dedicated pre-function space for small business gatherings. Windows at MKT offers floor-to-ceiling glass for spectacular views of the financial district. For especially large groups, all three spaces can be used together.

Four Seasons’ MKT Restaurant is the place to be in San Francisco’s financial district. But then, we would not expect anything less than the best from the Four Seasons properties. Make it a point to visit MKT Restaurant for casual, bar-centric dining on your next party or business gathering. It is open daily from 6:30 AM until midnight.
