The Fifty: 11 American Cities, Exactly 50 Picks Each — The Curated City Guide Worth Bookmarking

The Fifty — curated city guides with exactly 50 picks per city

Search “best restaurants in Austin” and you’ll wade through forty listicles promising thirty-seven essential spots, refreshed quarterly by whoever is winning the search-ranking game that month. Somewhere between the algorithmic roundups and the pay-to-play placements, the actual question — where should I eat tonight? — gets lost. The Fifty is a new editorial project built as a direct response to that noise: every city gets exactly 50 picks. Not 49, not 51. When a spot closes, it’s replaced by a new one, and the list stays at 50.

The constraint is the point. Six categories — Eat, Drink, Coffee, Stay, Experience, Shop — each entry written with an actual point of view, and every pick carrying a “signature” tip: the specific dish to order, the right hour to show up, the thing regulars know that first-timers don’t. There’s real photography for all 550 entries, a map for every city, and no affiliate links or sponsored placements; the guide lays out its standards on a methodology page.

Where to Start

Eleven U.S. cities are covered so far. For travelers who care about where they sleep, the Stay picks skew boutique and characterful: Hotel Saint Cecilia behind the hedges off South Congress in Austin, the century-old Hermitage and the Noelle in Nashville, the Sorrento and the Thompson in Seattle.

The Las Vegas guide is subtitled “Beyond the Strip” and reads like it — Chinatown omakase counters, Arts District wine bars, and the oldest steakhouse in town. Miami gets taken past the velvet rope to Cuban coffee windows and Allapattah galleries. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, and Denver round out the current set.

The best way to use it: pull up a city page before your trip, filter by category and neighborhood, and let the list make the decision for you. That’s what it’s for.
